How to Buy a Suppressor in Wyoming

Wyoming is one of the most suppressor-friendly states in the country. Suppressors are legal to own, legal to hunt with, and there’s no state-level permit or registration beyond the federal process. If you can legally own a firearm and you’re willing to file some paperwork and pay a one-time $200 federal tax, you can own a suppressor here. This guide walks you through exactly how it works when you buy through Gnome Arms.

Quick Facts: Suppressors in Wyoming

  • Legal to own? Yes. Wyoming places no state restrictions on suppressor ownership.
  • Legal to hunt with? Yes — Wyoming allows suppressor use for hunting.
  • State permit or registration? None. Only the federal NFA process applies.
  • Minimum age: 21 to buy from a dealer.
  • Cost beyond the suppressor: a one-time $200 federal tax stamp per suppressor.

Step 1: Pick Your Suppressor

Start with the caliber and host gun. A dedicated .22 can is the cheapest way into suppressed shooting; a .30-caliber can covers everything from 5.56 up through .300 Win Mag on multiple rifles; a 9mm can handles pistols and PCCs. Think about mounting too — direct-thread is simple and secure, quick-detach makes it easy to move one can between rifles. Not sure? Call us at (307) 371-2590 or stop by — we shoot suppressed and we’re happy to talk you through it.

Step 2: Buy Through a Class 3 Dealer

Gnome Arms LLC is a Type 07 FFL / Class 2 SOT in Green River — licensed to sell (and manufacture) NFA items. We’re also a Powered by Silencer Shop dealer, which makes the paperwork dramatically easier than the old days of paper forms and trips to the sheriff’s office.

Step 3: Complete Your Silencer Shop Profile

After purchase, you’ll certify your identity through the Silencer Shop app or a kiosk: digital fingerprints, a passport-style photo taken with your phone, and your personal information — entered once and reused for every future NFA purchase. You’ll also decide how to register it:

  • Individual: simplest option; the suppressor is registered to you alone.
  • Trust: lets multiple people (spouse, adult kids) legally possess and use the suppressor, and simplifies what happens to it in your estate. Silencer Shop can set up a single-shot trust as part of the process.

Step 4: ATF Form 4 and the $200 Tax Stamp

Your dealer files an ATF Form 4 electronically (eForm 4) transferring the suppressor to you, along with your $200 transfer tax — the “tax stamp.” That’s a one-time cost per suppressor, not annual.

Step 5: Wait for Approval

The ATF processes the application and runs a background check. Electronic Form 4 approval times have swung from a few days to several months over the past few years — ask us what current wait times look like when you order.

Step 6: Pick It Up and Go Shoot

Once your Form 4 is approved, you’ll come in by appointment, complete the transfer, and take your suppressor home. Keep a copy of your approved Form 4 with the suppressor.

Common Questions

Do I need permission to take my suppressor to another state?

Unlike short-barreled rifles, suppressors don’t require ATF notification to cross state lines — but the destination state must allow suppressor possession. Most do; a handful don’t.

Can my spouse or kids use it?

If it’s registered to a trust and they’re trust members, yes. If it’s registered to you individually, the suppressor must stay in your possession and control when it’s being used.

Can I hunt big game with it in Wyoming?

Yes. Suppressors are legal for hunting in Wyoming — and hearing protection while hunting is one of the best reasons to own one.

What does a suppressor actually cost all-in?

The can itself, the $200 stamp, and usually a small dealer/Silencer Shop processing cost. No annual fees, no renewals.

This page is general information, not legal advice. Federal and state law can change — verify current requirements before you buy, or just ask us.
